Matt Guffey (Power Hour & Hockey Coach) | (703)459-0227

Matt Guffey

2015-16 season Matt coached the U16AAA National, U16AAA American and U12AAA Junior Sharks teams. He began playing hockey on the east coast, in the DC Metro area. In only his third year on ice, he was selected to play for a local junior team, the Virginia Statesmen (Junior C). After two seasons with the Statesmen, one as an alternate captain, Matt moved on to the Junior Capitals organization in the MJHL (Junior B). One season later, he would make his Junior A debut in the Western States Hockey League with the Colorado Outlaws where he was again selected as an alternate captain. In his final year of junior hockey, Matt would captain the San Antonio Diablos (WSHL) before being recruited to play NCAA hockey at Worcester State University (DIII). During his college career, Matt trained under Wendy Marco (Cold Rush Hockey) with her elite group, known as "PRIME", which features NHLers, AHLers, European league players as well as NCAA DI and DIII skaters.

Matt has coached as a private instructor since the age of 17. He has coached Learn to Skate, Learn to Play Hockey and Adult Skating/Hockey clinics alongside former olympians Roman Skorniakov and Yuriy Litvinov. He has also coached at a variety of camps and clinics such as Hardcore Hockey (Reston, Virginia), StopIt Goaltending (Marlborough, Massachusetts) and most notably l'Ecole de Hockey de la Capitale (EHC) in Quebec City where current NHLer David Desharnais helps instruct.

He has a B.A. in French and Psychology and uses both frequently in coaching. Being bilingual has helped him reach a broader range of players from various French and English speaking countries. He hopes to add Russian to his language grouping thus rendering him more attractive as a coach to Russian-born skaters. He believes that his study in the field of Psychology, particularly that of Sports Psychology, has helped him figure out what makes each individual player tick and strives to use his knowledge of the human psyche in order to motivate each student to reach their full potential.

He has a passion for both hockey and power skating alike and tries to instill a pronounced level of intensity and work ethic in each and every one of his students. His lesson plans are tailored to the needs of his students and include agility, balance, edge control, explosiveness and an element of high leverage practice (drills focused on a targeted situation that are often overlooked in team practice).
